UPDATE ON FUAPA, NOW UPROAR: A CHANGE OF NAME TO EMPHASIZE OUR MISSION (2025) By Kevin “Rashid” Johnson
On Feb 18, 2025, members and supporters of Families United Against Prison Abuse (FUAPA) met to discuss proposals, including another name change. The group was originally named People Against Prison Abuse (PAPA). Then we discovered that other preexisting groups had already used the name and acronym, including at least one reactionary group. This was when and why the name FUAPA was adopted.
After meeting and adopting the name FUAPA on Feb 10, 2025, it was suggested that the group’s name and acronym should memorable, and should express a strong message and the intent as not a mere advocacy movement but one that aims to bring exposure and pressure against officials and stop prison abuses. Several names were suggested. But the one settled on by unanimous agreement was United Prisoners & Relatives Organizing Against Repression (UPROAR).
We believe this newest name captures the spirit of a movement based on empowering prisoners and their loved ones and standing in firm resistance against prison abuses. We want to capture four core purposes of UPROAR. They being:
1 – Direct confrontation: we don’t just advocate, we organize, resist and apply pressure.
2 – Families as a force: this is a movement led by prisoners and their loved ones, not by detached NGOs, not-for-profits, or career activists.
3 – Inside-Outside-Unity: we connect the struggle inside to generate pressure outside, breaking the isolation prisons depend on.
4 – Material Resistance: we expose repression, mobilize communities, and dismantle systemic abuse not just describe it.
With this new name change we want to build UPROAR into an inside/outside prisoner support movement that will genuinely bring change to conditions within Amerika’s razor wire plantations. Join us and help make a powerful and loud UPROAR!
