Who’s been the key to
\nOur survival
\nSince our arrival
\nOn western shores
\nIn scores
\nOf slave ship holds
\nUnder the whip
\nTo be sold
\nBut now when told
\nHistory is flipped
\nTo deny her role
\nHer very soul
\nShredded to make us
\nLess than whole
\nOur Black woman
\nForced to uphold
\nTwo roles
\nFather and mother
\nAs the males
\nHave been ripped
\nFrom our homes
\nWith welfare prison
\nDrug addiction
\nVictims
\nOf man made affliction
\nThe cause of our demise
\nDivision
\nLoss of unity
\nIn our community
\nThe aim of this divide
\nInflicted with precision
\nGenocide
\nNowhere do we see
\nIn the entertainment
\nIndustry
\nAny imagery
\nOf the Black man and woman
\nIn harmony
\nHealthy intimacy
\nEither they’re
\nAlone or tied to another
\nColor
\nA Black man or woman
\nWith a white lover
\nWhich is no bother
\nIf it weren’t happening
\nAs part of a process
\nOf turning our people against
\nEach other
\nOur communities
\nUnder attack
\nGentrification
\nLoss of role models
\nAnd disrespect
\nThe basis
\nOf how we
\nInteract
\nOur women degraded
\nNot loved but despised
\nMen jaded
\nCalled boy
\nInfantilized
\nGenerations ago
\nWe couldn’t call
\nSistas hos
\nOr bitch
\nBut now things done switched
\nDuring the Panther era
\nWhen there were
\nWomen right there with us
\nOn the front lines
\nFacing the pigs down
\nWith carbines
\nAnd razor sharp minds
\nThey stopped
\nStraightening their hair
\nDidn’t care
\nAbout European beauty standards
\nOr despair
\nWe gotta fight it
\nThink far sighted
\nThe torch of our past struggles
\nReignited
\nDo you even understand
\nWhy we must stand
\nHand in hand
\nUnity between
\nBlack woman and man
\nLook back at history
\nIt’s no mystery
\nThat in this land
\nShe was the force
\nHolding us together
\nDidn’t matter whether
\nIt was
\nDuring slavery
\nJim crow rape
\nOr genocide
\nShe was there
\nFirmly by our side
\nDown for the whole ride
\nEven as we tore down
\nOur own communities and towns
\nShe stuck around
\nTill we found
\nSolid ground
\nAnd there she
\nHelped rebuild
\nShelter and homes
\nBut now she’s left to stand alone
\nUnder forced
\nDefense
\nBlack women left to claim
\nIndependence
\nFrom black men
\nWhich makes no sense
\nWe gotta mend this fence
\nLike George Jackson said
\nAnd I put in quotations
\n“The black man and woman must be united
\nIn our struggle
\nFor liberation”
\nSo where do you stand?
\nWhat you gonna do?
\nKeep boxing her in
\nSo we can’t get through
\nThe doors of freedom
\nWe need ’em
\nOur women
\nRedeem ’em
\nTo reclaim
\nTheir rightful role
\nAs our community’s soul
\nAnd be so bold
\nAs to take her hand
\nIn a firm hold
\nAnd not let go
\nUntil we reach that freedom land
\nTaking the milk and honey
\nNot chasing toys tokens
\nCheap fads and money
\nThis is why we gotta
\nIdentify the true enemy
