Hubert Harrison
\nHis name is a mystery
\nWritten out of history
\nBecause he left no stone unturned
\nFrom every source he learned
\nAll exploiters he spurned
\nFrom Booker T. Washington to Marcus Garvey
\nHe boldly exposed the pawns of racist bosses
\nAnd those who used Black causes
\nTo hustle the people
\nHe was without equal
\nRated
\nOne of the greatest minds
\nOf his time
\nWhen Blacks migrated
\nTo urban centers from the South to find
\nFreedom from poverty
\nLynchings and the Ku Klux Klan
\nSaw much to be learned from Afrikans
\nAn unrivaled people’s champion
\nStood for women’s equal rights
\nLed the struggle against
\nLynch mobs and supremacy of whites
\nSpoke against the attack on Black Wall Street
\nWith white mobs and bombs
\nCalled on Blacks to take up arms
\nTo protect themselves
\nTo respect themselves
\nRejected leadership from the elite and middle classes
\nChampioned creating leadership from the masses
\nRecognized Black people as a nation
\nMaintained a humble occupation
\nA proletarian postal worker
\nStreet orator
\nBlack journalist
\nAnd mass educator
\nA leading Black socialist
\nThe mind behind Garvey’s UNIA
\nUntil he witnessed Garvey betray
\nThe people with scams bombast and lies
\nWhich he despised
\nBroke ranks
\nExposed Garvey as a hustle
\nWith fake Afrikan muscle
\nBehind him
\nGarvey tried to keep Hubert in line
\nBut he wouldn’t mind him
\nAn ‘Emperor Jones’ he defined him
\nInfluenced every major Black voice
\nOf the Renaissance in Harlem
\nThe people’s choice
\nMany regarded him
\nThe father of radical Black
\nLiterature poetry and theater
\nUnmatched brilliance as a
\nScientific thinker
\nTheoretical creator
\nIf it began in early Black Harlem he led it
\nA race and class conscious critic
\nFrom JA Rogers and Cyril Briggs
\nTo Winston James
\nAmong those he influenced
\nWere the greatest names
\nIn Black history
\nYet his name is a mystery
\nFew know this story
\nCuz he boldly exposed those
\nWho falsely posed
\nAs champions of the people
\nScammers and con men
\nOpportunists he’d see through
\nMany of whom were in league
\nWith the powers that be
\nLike Booker T.
\nIt was his honesty
\nThat made them his enemy
\nSo they were able to themselves erase
\nAnd put themselves in place
\nOf his legacy
\nIf many Black leaders knew
\nOf Hubert’s political breakthroughs
\nWe’d have avoided many obstacles
\nHe showed what was possible
\nWhen the source
\nOf our political voice
\nIs the people en masse
\nRemember Hubert Harrison
