Solitary confinement is torture. Kevin Rashid Johnson has spent decades in\u00a0the hole. Last week we put out an urgent Medical Alert Eblast urging care\u00a0for severe headaches and dangerous blood pressure levels. That same day\u00a0Kevin Rashid Johnson\u2019s legal advisor on his Oregon cases, Ben Haile of the\u00a0Portland Law Collective, got a phone call through to him. After three weeks
\nof symptoms, Rashid still has not seen a doctor. Hypertension (high blood\u00a0pressure) left untreated is a killer especially in prison. Over the next\u00a0few days, your calls, emails, and faxes made an enormous difference.<\/p>\n

A caller, Bruce from Canada, spoke directly to the warden who said \u201cWe will\u00a0get him looked at\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Ombudsman personally replied to many emails. When the volume of emails\u00a0kept going up we heard that some emails were rejected.<\/p>\n

After his legal team was denied a visit on May 19th, Dana in California\u00a0with Peoples’ Action for Rights and Community contacted the TDCJ Access to\u00a0Counsel Office and they responded with a personal email that legal phone\u00a0calls and visits are required by law. The Legal team will keep following up\u00a0to re-schedule this visit.<\/p>\n

Just yesterday, Prof. Crispino in Austin, one of Rashid\u2019s supporters, was\u00a0able to speak to both the warden and the Health Services staff. They are\u00a0stating that Rashid has now received blood pressure pills, and his pressure\u00a0monitored.<\/p>\n

Rashid has asked that you highlight the nature of solitary and MAX units,\u00a0and their deleterious affects on all inmate’s health. His concern is for\u00a0everyone in these control units.<\/p>\n

Here are \u00a0five things you can do to help:<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0Write Rashid today.<\/strong>\u00a0Send your\u00a0Rashid Postcard\u00a0<\/a>\u2014 if you don\u2019t have a stack of them for your friends order them from us, ask us to send you a dozen by snail mail. Use them to have your friends write Rashid.<\/p>\n
